Heel SpursOverviewThere are many causes for heel pain. Heel spurs are only one of the causes. They are an abnormal growth in the heel bone usually due to an excessive pull on the plantar fascia (fibrous band of tissue that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot). Heel spurs are actually calcium deposits that develop over time into a sharp bony growth under the heel bone. They can be very painful first thing in the morning and that is because the tissue tightens when you are not active. Heel spurs can result from improper foot movement during running or walking and excessive body weight and pain may increase with age. Wearing supportive footwear immediately upon wakening to avoid this may help. Also, you should never walk barefoot. A permanent solution could include long-term biomechanical control of flat feet or accommodation of a rigid high arch as an essential treatment. Also, you may consider an orthotic that comes with the option of posting for flat feet. If this problem continues, you should consult your podiatrist for the proper diagnosis and treatment. | |||||||
